Difference Between Bone Marrow Biopsy and Bone Marrow Aspirate

Mar 10, 2022

Bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow aspirate have distinct roles and diagnostic goals, as follows:

1. Bone marrow biopsy: It is used for the examination of acute leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and lymphoma with bone marrow invasion. There are many tissues taken out by bone marrow biopsy, which contains abundant cells. The distribution of cells can be known under the pathological tissue. , so it has certain benefits for the diagnosis of the above diseases, which cannot be seen in the bone marrow aspirate smear examination;

2. Bone marrow puncture: Take out a certain amount of bone marrow fluid, generally the amount of bone marrow fluid is very small, about 0.2 mL, and observe it under a microscope on a glass slide. The proportion and maturity of myeloid, myeloid and megakaryocytes, and whether there is pathological hematopoiesis are the most meaningful for the diagnosis of acute leukemia, whether it is acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, or myelodysplastic syndrome. Rely on these proportions to be clear.

These two examinations have their own advantages and can complement each other. Most of the two examinations are required to be done when diagnosing blood diseases.
